History
In the 1980's the insurance industry in Southern California was concentrated in the mid- Wilshire area of Los Angeles. Having brokers, underwriters and reinsurers largely concentrated in on area allowed people in the industry to meet regularly in a variety of settings. In the middle of the 80's a small group of mostly property professionals organized an informal holiday party that over the next few years grew into a large party attended by a large part of the industry. The local charities where the beneficiaries of any proceeds and toys were always collected for deserving children.
It was in the late 1980's when the L.A. Underwriters, a formal organization that held
monthly meetings as well as other events to advance the insurance industry in Los
Angeles, was having a difficult time garnering support. This lack of support was made
especially difficult by the increasing movement of the insurance industry from the mid-
Wilshire area to outlying areas. It was in the early 1990's that a group of individuals that attended that annual holiday party and the L.A. Underwriters decided to combine forces and the California Association of Insurance Professionals (CAIP) was formed.
In keeping with tradition of their predecessors, the founding members formed CAIP with the with following mission statement:
Our mission is to promote a facility which provides opportunities for professional
education along with social activities for the purpose of benefiting charities in Southern California.
To accomplish this mission the CAIP Board of Directors, with the support of the
members, used holiday events, golf events and educational seminars.
Since CAIP's inception CAIP has donated over $70,000 to charities including Habitat for Humanity, Second Careers, Chrysalis, and beginning in 2000, Child Share, which aids in placing children with foster families. And keeping up the longest tradition CAIP's members have donated countless numbers of toys to less for fortunate children during the holidays.
Socially, from the very first CAIP sponsored holiday party at the Italian Fisherman in
Glendale, to the current party at Hard Rock, CAIP has provided a venue for
members of all facets of the insurance industry to meet, network and have a good time with a charitable cause in mind. Traditionally our most successful event each year is the golf tournament, which is played in the spring time and was first played at Braemar County Club in 1993 and continues today at La Canada Flintridge Country Club.
Lastly, CAIP has sponsored educational seminars starting first with a Difference-In-
Conditions seminar in 1996 continuing with an E&O seminal in 2002 and mostly recently in 2004 CAIP teamed with the CPCU Society to bring together a very successful seminar focusing on Workers Compensation.
